Scarecrows and pumpkins...

We read some great scarecrow stories on Monday, and created scarecrows of our own. We also made a scarecrow for our classroom!

Later in the week we enjoyed some pumpkin books and made a pumpkin vine for our hall and some jack-o-lanterns for our room!

Monday was our first day with iReady in the computer lab. I was able to work individually with some of the students, which provided a little more support. This assessment is given district wide and provides feedback about learning strengths and needs.
We introduced a new coping skill called "the Toolbox" this week. The toolbox contains some calming tools (squishy balls, putty, fidgets etc) - students may request to use the toolbox when they recognize that they are not in the green zone (or when we offer it when we see they are upset). Typically, we use a tool for about 5 minutes, and then move on with the day. It is a "distraction with a purpose" and often really effective because it gives children a few minutes away from their anger, and that is time for the brain to calm down and regulate. Many children enjoy creating a toolbox to have at home too (putty, squish balls etc are often sold at the dollar store).
Don't forget to return permission slips for our field trip to the Outdoor Education Center on November 1. There is no cost, but the boys need to bring a bag lunch to eat at the Outdoor Center.
October 31 is a half day of school, and is also Halloween. Students may bring their costume to school to wear that day for our Halloween Parade. We will have a simple snack, but not a big party.
